There’s nothing more exciting than stumbling upon a hidden gem, and I can truly say our visit to Spreewald, Germany was one of my favorite mini-getaways so far. Spreewald, named a UNESCO biosphere reserve back in 1991, is known for its picturesque 187 sq. miles of canals that are used for traditional irrigation, and the natural organic products these canals and surrounding areas produce. If you’re currently thinking of a little venice meets fairytale forest, you’ve got the right idea. Spreewald is located about an hour south east of Berlin, and to be honest, when I first started researching it back in 2016, I wasn’t finding that much info on what the area provided. Why drive several hours to visit such a strange and seemingly ... Read More
Changes, Life in Germany: an Unpublished Year
It has been a hot minute since I’ve blogged, and have had itchy fingers to write again for some time. I’ve struggled with figuring out how to get back into it, especially since this year has had so many ups and downs, lots of new experiences, and yet has remained somewhat the same for us as we spend another 365 days living as expats in a foreign land. Since I began writing in 2012, I have enjoyed sharing what life is like abroad, trip itineraries, and dabbled a bit in some photojournalism, but sometimes it’s also nice to share a few personal updates so you get to know who I am as an individual. I touched on this last year, and I haven’t changed my mind on it. The few moments I’ve had to even consider writing, I’ve ultimately spent ... Read More
A Visit to Berchtesgaden, Germany
Derik and I knew we wanted to take an cool trip somewhere in Germany over Memorial Day, but we didn’t realize how epic Berchtesgaden was going to be until we drove into town. It’s hard to get a genuine feel for a place by looking at Google images, and honestly half the time the images found are only of the most scenic and picturesque locations, and sometimes the rest of the area can be rather drab and boring. Not Berchtesgaden. This sleepy little ski-town is home to some of the most gorgeous landscape views in Germany (personal opinion but should be straight fact), and part of me kind of wishes to keep it all to myself and not share it with you guys. I like the fact that it wasn’t overly polluted with tourists for being a destination ... Read More
Oh Hi, We Moved to Germany
It’s been a while since I’ve done a personal update on our lives. As many of you know, I basically took the last year off from blogging (posts were VERY few and far between). I have plenty of destinations, pictures, and advice to share, but after moving back to the U.S.A., Derik and I got busy living life outside the internet and blogging took a back-burner. I’m not sad about it. Sure my stats have tanked, my Instagram is hanging on by a thread, and half of you are probably wondering who the heck I actually am over here; the simple fact is, Living in Another Language took an overly-long hiatus and I may be starting from scratch again to gain momentum but that’s completely fine with me. We’ve had a lot going on in our lives the ... Read More
Visiting The World’s Largest Pumpkin Festival
I had to wait an entire year to write this post. Last Fall, Derik and I spent three months in Germany visiting my sister (the adorable girl you see in the post below with Derik is one of our nieces) and going on quite a few adventures…of which included The World’s Largest Pumpkin Festival. After our time in Germany was up, we moved to Alaska and spent a couple months getting stuff in order after our four years of living abroad. Before I knew it, pumpkin spice lattes were no longer in season, and the world was suddenly in full-blown Christmas/New Year’s mode. And then came Spring. By that point it would have been kind of ridiculous to post about a Fall festival — Spring is all about flowers, green grass, fresh air and sunshine. ... Read More
A Day in Ruedesheim
You may have already noticed on Instagram and Facebook, but we're in Germany! We couldn't be more excited to spend a couple months with my sister, brother-in-law, and our two adorable little nieces (stationed here with the U.S. military). As the weather has started to cool, we've been enjoying the great outdoors as much as possible! I'm still bogged down with work, so that hinders me from permanently living outside (I have an insane amount of content to share with you from New Zealand, Bali, Italy, and Croatia). We decided to take a trip to Ruedesheim (Rhine River — wine country) yesterday after the weather once again pulled out for the win. As we arrived at one of the many parking areas in Ruedesheim, I couldn't have been more ... Read More
